Founded in 1938 by Stanley Kaplan, Kaplan Inc. provides educational and training services to individuals, schools and companies worldwide. The company offers a wide range of test preparation and certifications as well as student support services, all of which help students to achieve their goals in life.
The History of Kaplan Incorporated
Originally called the New York City College Preparatory Institute, Kaplan began in a Brooklyn basement in 1938 when company founder Stanley Kaplan tutored students for the New York State Regents exam. The business soon expanded to include English language classes and admissions counseling, with locations around the country.
In 1946, the company introduced its first 16-session SAT preparatory course, which soon gained prominence in the industry. In the 1970s, Kaplan opened its first branch outside of New York City, in Philadelphia; later it expanded to other cities and states.
The firm’s core product was its standardized test preparation courses, which had grown to be the most popular in the United States and were available at a variety of prices. These courses were offered through a network of more than 150 educational centers across the country.
These centers were located in both urban and suburban areas, and they catered to both high school and college students. The company was also an early leader in the marketing of computerized SAT and GRE prep programs, which are now widely used by students around the world.
Kaplan also has a number of other business units that provide education and professional training, including Kaplan International Languages, which operates about 40 schools in Asia, Europe and the United States; and Kaplan International Pathways, which runs pathways programs to help international students progress onto degree programs at top-ranked universities in the U.S. and UK.
Other major business units are Kaplan Learning, which operates online courses for a range of standardized tests; and Kaplan Professional, which offers licensure, certification and training products. In 2018, Kaplan Professional acquired PPI as a strategic addition to its extensive portfolio of licensure, certification and training products.
